Kimchi in Reply 1988
What happens
Episode one, Ssangmun-dong, dinnertime: every mother cooks extra, every kid is dispatched next door with a bowl, and by the time the tables are set, each household's dinner contains all five families' cooking — kimchi for salad, curry for stew. Koreans point to this scene when explaining what banchan culture is really about: food as a shared commons, not a private plate.
The food: Kimchi (배추김치)
Fermented napa cabbage — the one dish on every Korean table.
