What is Nakji Bokkeum?
Nakji-bokkeum is octopus at maximum velocity: small octopus flash-stir-fried in a scorching gochugaru sauce that made Mugyo-dong and Jopok-style alleys famous for reducing grown adults to hiccups. Tender if fast, rubbery if slow — and the heat is the identity, not an accident.
How to eat it
- Eat over rice or wrapped with the provided bean sprouts/somyeon to buffer the burn.
- Kongnamul (blanched sprouts) on the side is the traditional fire extinguisher.
- Water helps less than rice does; plan accordingly.
Good to know
- Top-tier spice among common dishes — Mugyo-dong old-style is genuinely punishing; order mild unless proven.
- Octopus overcooks to rubber in a minute — good places serve it almost violently fast.
Nak-gop-sae (octopus + tripe + shrimp) is the Busan evolution — see Gaemijip.
Where to eat it
